I can see how things could south. It's one thing to do an adaptation of Shakespeare. It's another to try and write stories of what happened next and approach anything resembling the original quality.

So it's kinda like that anime series, Fullmetal Alchemist. They ran out of source material and just had to bullshit their way through the rest of the series. I'm assuming this has the same controversy among purists.

I've never watched the show, but it seems a bit surprising that such a mega-success would have a change in the people behind it. What lured the old writers away?

A local theater showed both Pillow Talk and The Man Who Knew Too Much in the past few months. Kinda interesting for those in attendance that they had a final opportunity to see her two most famous films on the big screen before she passed.

If Nintendo's Popeye had been a smash success, it might've led to other studios wanting to capitalize on it or get their own version. Maybe we would've seen Atari's Mickey Mouse or Nintendo's Amazing Spider-Man.

What if King Productions hadn't waited until after the success of Donkey Kong? What if that game had seen Popeye on a construction site rescuing Olive Oyl from a barrel-tossing Bluto?

Would Popeye have become Nintendo's go-to guy for games? Without an original mascot, would Super Mario Bros. have been a loose adaptation of Journey to the West? (Shigeru Miyamoto wanted the game's villain to be like the Ox King before the hero was ever finalized.) Would we have seen video games based off of Betty Boop and Beetle Bailey?

It's a lot like George Lucas making Star Wars after getting turned down for a Flash Gordon adaptation. It's interesting to think about the possibilities the intellectual property owners might've passed on and how the individuals who were turned down might've profited even more from having successful original properties.
